Section 9: Automatic Guideway Transit (AGT):
AGT is a new rail transit system where vehicles use rubber wheels guided by guide wheels on two parallel tracks, controlled automatically by computers. Developed by Westinghouse Electric in the 1960s, followed by Japan and France, AGT features unmanned vehicles. Its core technologies include guideway and automation control. Guideways can be either side-guided or center-guided. Tracks are usually elevated reinforced concrete strips. Power supply is DC 750V.
AGT systems are classified into three types: Shuttle Loop Transit (SLT), Group Rapid Transit (GRT), and Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). SLT is the simplest, with large cars for about 100 passengers circulating on fixed routes (like horizontal elevators). GRT serves groups with the same origin and destination, using medium-sized cars for 12 to 70 passengers, like automated buses with frequent schedules and branch routes. PRT uses small cars for 2 to 6 passengers, controlled by computers to navigate complex networks and transfer passengers via switches.
AGT is highly automated, flexible, and efficient, adjusting density based on passenger flow. Rubber wheels provide strong adhesion, good climbing ability, and adaptability to tight curves. It's ideal for shuttle or loop services, airport passenger transport, amusement parks, and large communities. It also plays a significant role in medium-capacity urban passenger transport.
